What is the Photo Dash and Why You Should Consider It for Your Wedding
Let’s talk about one of my favorite reception ideas that adds a ton of fun while solving a couple of common wedding headaches. It’s called the photo dash.
The photo dash is simple. Your DJ dismisses tables one at a time to head over and take a quick picture with the bride and groom. While they are there, they get to share a few kind words and a laugh before heading straight to the buffet. It’s quick, it’s organized, and it works beautifully.
Why do it?
Well, it’s the perfect two-for-one. You get a special moment to connect with each guest, and you end up with a picture of every single person who came to celebrate with you. No one is left out, and your photographer gets those keepsake shots without awkward interruptions later.
It also fixes one of the most boring parts of a wedding reception—waiting for your table to be called for dinner. Instead of sitting there anxiously watching the buffet line, guests get something fun and meaningful to do. And for you as the couple, it removes the pressure of wandering from table to table mid-meal, trying to catch people between bites while hovering over them.
Here’s how it works.
The bride and groom pick a flattering, well-lit spot in the reception space, working with the photographer to make sure it’s perfect. Once everyone is ready, the DJ calls the first table up for their photo. They get their moment with you, head to the buffet, and the process repeats until everyone has had their turn.
There is another way to do it—having the bride and groom move from table to table instead of the guests coming to you. While this can work, it often means less control over lighting and backgrounds, which can make the photos less flattering.
Should you do a photo dash at your wedding?
Absolutely. As a DJ, I can tell you dismissing tables has always been one of those tasks that lacks any real personality. This changes that completely. It’s fun, it’s efficient, and it guarantees every guest feels seen and appreciated while keeping the flow of your reception smooth from start to finish.
